Bio - Cha Seng Tiang


CHA SENG TIANG BARITONE

A receiver of the Hong Kong Academy For Performing Arts full-scholarship after winning the 1988 Malaysia National Art Song Singing Competition. Penang-born Cha Seng Tiang studied under International renowned opera singer Michael Rippon.

Summer 91,Cha was invited to Sapporo, Japan to participate in the Pacific Music Festival where he performed the Leonard Bernstein’s Songfest and Chichester Psalms under the baton of maestro Michael Tilson Thomas and Michael Barret.He also took part in recitals and concerts under the guidance of Paul Sperry at different cities in Hokkaido, Japan.

Cha performed at “Mystical Journey to Putuoshan” world premier English Buddhist Musical as Chen the butcher was a great success in July 07.He also sang in “Romanza” recital at Mont Kiara International School in May 2007 ,Cha also appeared in Beethoven Symphony No9 “Choral” as baritone soloist at Istana Budaya program with the National Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Mustafa Fuzer Nawi in March 2007.Seng Tiang’s stage repertoire includes various oratorios and opera classics as Adam in The Creation by Haydn with conductor Anthony Walker; YTL 50th Anniversary concert of celebration and Mozart 250 opera concert organized by Artist Platform. He also sang in Charity concert “Night of Classics” to raise fund for the Selangor Cheshire Home at P.J. Civic Hall and “Tsunami Concert” at MCA hall.

In June 2008, Cha gave a concert in Indonesia Surabaya Buddhist Festival and he was invited by Penang Music Camp to performed Baritone solo in Beethoven Symphony no 9 ‘Choral” again with the Penang Symphony Orchestra Dec 08.

His operatic roles includes Cadmus (Semele) ,Billy (Rise and Fall of town Mahagonny) Gugliemo (Cosi Fan Tutte), Alfio (Cavaliera Rusticana), Angelotti (Tosca), Don Cairo & Morales (Carmen),Marchese (La Traviata), Fiorello (Il Babiere di Siviglia), Cascada (Merry Widow) and Dr Blind in (Die Fledermaus).

In teaching, he was attached to Academi Seni Kebangsaan and UiTM Music Education Department as well as Performing Arts Department for many years. And now, Seng Tiang is the principal at Vocal Talents Music (VTM) began in 2004 where he nurtures new singers and young tutors. He also attached to Pusat Kebudayaan University Malaya as Vocal Instructor.
