Bio - Cha Seng Tiang



CHA SENG TIANG BARITONE
Penang-born Cha Seng Tiang is a full scholarship recipient of the Hong Kong Academy For Performing Arts after winning the 1988 Malaysia National Art Song Singing Competition. There, he studied under renowned international opera singer Michael Rippon. In summer 1991, Seng Tiang was invited to Sapporo, Japan to participate in the Pacific Music Festival where he performed Leonard Bernstein’s Songfest and Chichester Psalms under the baton of maestro Michael Tilson Thomas and Michael Barret. He also took part in recitals and concerts under the guidance of Paul Sperry in different cities in Hokkaido, Japan.

Seng Tiang was privileged to have been also coached by other world renowned musicians and singers such as Rudolf Piernay, June Anderson, Zhou Xiao Yan, Li Xing Chang, Derek Anthony, Angelo Marenzi, Loh Siew Tuan and Maurizio Colacicchi, leaving a deep impression on them.

Seng Tiang’s stage repertoire is extensive, covering various oratorios and opera classics. His operatic roles include Cadmus (Semele), Billy (Rise and Fall of town Mahagonny) Gugliemo (Cosi Fan Tutte), Alfio (Cavaliera Rusticana), Angelotti (Tosca), Don Cairo & Morales (Carmen), Marchese (La Traviata), Fiorello (Il Babiere di Siviglia), Cascada (The Merry Widow) and Dr Blind (Die Fledermaus).  He has also played the role of Adam in The Creation by Haydn under conductor Anthony Walker, and sung as solo baritone in Handel’s Messiah under Paul Baker.

As a recitalist, Seng Tiang has performed in numerous concerts around Malaysia, receiving rave reviews from the public. His most recent appearances include a charity solo recital at the Mont Kiara International School and the HSBC Classics Opera Extravaganza.

Often hailed as a teacher with a Midas Touch, Seng Tiang is also well known for his extraordinary teaching skills, having the ability to diagnose and solve virtually any issue regarding singing. He is now principal of Vocal Talents Music (VTM) which he co-founded in 2004. The school has been instrumental in nurturing new singers and young tutors, many of whom have made a name for themselves in the classical singing fraternity.
